چکیده

The rapid TeV γ−ray variability detected in the well-known nearby radio galaxy M87 implies an extremely compact emission region (5 − 10 Schwarzschild radii) near the horizon of the supermassive black hole in the galactic center. TeV photons are affected by dilution due to interaction with the radiation field of the advectiondominated accretion flow (ADAF) around the black hole, and can thus be used to probe the innermost regions around the black hole. We calculate the optical depth of the ADAF radiation field to the TeV photons and find it strongly depends on the spin of the black hole. We find that transparent radii of 10 TeV photons are of 5RS and 13RS for the maximally rotating and non-rotating black holes, respectively. With the observations, the calculated transparent radii strongly suggest the black hole is spinning fast in the galaxy. TeV photons could be used as a powerful diagnostic for estimating black hole spins in galaxies in the future. Subject headings: black hole physics — galaxies: individual M87

Constraining Spins of Supermassive Black Holes from Tev Variability. Ii. Fully General Relativistic Calculations

The fast variability of energetic TeV photons from the center of M87 has been detected, offering a new clue to estimate spins of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We extend the study of Wang et al. (2008) by including all of general relativistic effects. We numerically solve the full set of relativistic hydrodynamical equations of the radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs) and then obt...

Variable VHE gamma-ray emission from non-blazar AGNs

Context. The observation of rapidly variable very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays from non-aligned active galactic nuclei (AGNs), as reported from M87, proves challenging for conventional theoretical acceleration and emission models. Aims. Motivated by recent work on pulsar-type particle acceleration in M87 (Neronov & Aharonian 2007), we re-examine the centrifugal acceleration of particles by rota...

The Event Horizon of M87

The M 6 109 × ⊙ supermassive black hole at the center of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 powers a relativistic jet. Observations at millimeter wavelengths with the Event Horizon Telescope have localized the emission from the base of this jet to angular scales comparable to the putative black hole horizon. The jet might be powered directly by an accretion disk or by electromagnetic extraction of...

ALMA Continuum Spectrum of the M87 Nucleus

We report the preliminary result of ALMA continuum observations toward the M87 nucleus at thirtysix frequencies (quasi-simultaneously) ranging from 90 GHz to 700 GHz. We detected the nuclear component at almost all the frequency points. We found a spectral break at the millimeter regime: a nearly flat spectrum at lower frequencies and a steep spectrum at higher frequencies. The spectral profile...

Evidence for Molecular Gas in the Nucleus of M87 and Implications for the Fueling of Supermassive Black Holes

Supermassive black holes in the centers of giant elliptical galaxies are remarkably faint given their expected accretion rates. This motivates models of radiatively inefficient accretion, due to either thermal decoupling of ions from electrons, the generation of outflows or convective motions that inhibit accretion, or the settling of gas to a gravitationally unstable disk that forms stars in p...
